Frostrail Guide

Frostrail demo: dates, install, contents

Quick answer

The Frostrail demo is a free, separate Steam app (5090080) available from 19 to 26 October 2026 during Steam Next Fest. It contains three areas, train operation, scavenging, crafting and Revenant combat, and supports solo or co-op for up to four players.

The Frostrail demo is free on Steam and runs during Steam Next Fest from 19 to 26 October 2026. It is a separate app (Frostrail Demo, app 5090080), installs without owning the full game, and supports solo or online co-op for up to four players. Its official content list is short: explore three areas, conduct your train, scavenge and craft, fight revenants.

How to install it

  1. Open the Frostrail Demo store page on Steam, or use the demo button on the main Frostrail store page.
  2. Press the green install button — the demo is free and does not require the base game.
  3. It appears in your library as its own entry, separate from the full game, which will not be purchasable until Early Access.

What is in it

The official demo graphic lists four pillars, and each maps to something you can check in the first ten minutes:

Official lineWhat it means in play
Explore 3 areasThree authored map areas reachable by train, not an open world
Conduct your trainFuel the Eden Engine, manage power, drive between stops
Scavenge and craftLoot settlements and wrecks, turn scrap into gear at stations
Fight revenantsThe hostile faction; close-range combat with scarce ammo

It also lists the demo's languages: English, French, German, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Spanish and Simplified Chinese. All seven match the languages the full game lists on Steam.

What changed since the closed beta

The 19 October announcement is unusually specific about the delta between the September beta and this demo, and it reads as a statement of priorities:

  • Combat — improved melee hit feedback, enhanced blood splatter effects, adjusted stamina consumption for balance.
  • Animations — idle animations added while holding melee weapons.
  • Crafting — sounds added during dismantling and on completion.
  • Train — improved boarding ramp, better visibility through the windows to see what is ahead.

No new areas, no new systems in that list. This build is a polish pass on the beta rather than a content drop, which fits what the studio said it wanted out of Next Fest: bug reports and tuning feedback before Early Access.

The playtest history

Frostrail has been tested in public far more than most unreleased games, and the numbers are part of why it is worth attention:

WindowWhat happened
November 2025First limited playtest, small invited group
16–27 April 2026Closed playtest, extended to 4 May after 400,000 wishlists; over 100,000 applications
31 August – 7 September 2026Closed beta during Steam's PvE Survival Crafting Fest; 70,000+ players took part
19–26 October 2026Free Next Fest demo, open to everyone

The closed beta had no NDA — recording and streaming were explicitly allowed — and testers could invite up to three friends, who could each invite three more. If you watched Frostrail footage in September, it was very likely from that beta.

What to expect, and what not to

Expect: a working co-op slice, a train you can actually operate, three areas, a crafting tree deep enough to build a pipe rifle and clothing, and Revenants that will kill you if you fight them badly.

Do not expect: the campaign, the full map, mid-game carriages, a finished tutorial, or a price. FakeFish has been clear that the demo is a look at the game "as we get closer to our Early Access release", and Early Access itself has no fixed date beyond 2026.

After the demo

Two things follow from here. The first is the release date page, which tracks the 2026 Early Access window and the still-unannounced price. The second is the FAQ — the studio is running a survey alongside the demo and a dedicated demo feedback forum on Steam, and the things players report now are the things that get fixed before launch.

If you are still deciding whether to install it, the honest framing is this: the demo is a half-hour loop you will probably replay three or four times with different crews. That is exactly what a Next Fest demo is for, and it is free.
